What Is a Slot?

slot

A slot is a dynamic container that either waits for content (passive) or calls out for it (active). Content in slots is dictated by a scenario. Slots can be of any type, including Media-image and Solutions repository items. However, it is recommended that you only use one scenario to fill a slot. Using multiple scenarios can result in unpredictable results.

A narrow notch, groove, or opening, as in a keyway in machinery, a slit for coins in a vending machine, or a position in a group or series: He slotted himself into the crowded conference room.

The position on a football team’s roster assigned to the fastest receiver: A player in the slot has more opportunities to make explosive plays.

In a casino, a woman pumping money into machines up and down an aisle was disappointed when number six stopped paying while number one, at the end of the row, paid a jackpot. But this is not necessarily a sign that a machine is due to hit; it could simply be that the operator’s programmers have set certain machines to pay more than others.

If you’re playing a slot tournament, be sure to know when to walk away. If you’re up big, it’s easy to keep spending money without realizing when you should stop. Ideally, you should set a “stake” for yourself in advance — a specific amount that you will walk away with when you’ve reached it. This can help prevent you from going broke or overspending.
